We wish you warmly welcome to the Summer Gathering and Family Reunion of the Hellman of Oulu Family Association. The gathering will take place in Oulu, Finland on 5-8 August 2017.

The theme of the gathering is “The Oulu of our Ancestors”. On the first day of the gathering we will set off on a walking tour guided by Architect Ms. Kaarina Niskala, who will introduce to us the houses and enterprises of our ancestors. The main attractions of downtown Oulu will also be covered on the tour.

Just like any city, Oulu has developed and changed a great deal over the past centuries. We will get a glimpse of Oulu of the olden days in the Museum of Northern Ostrobothnia, which displays a miniature scale model of Oulu in 1938. The model is designed by Ms. Kaarina Niskala, an expert in the architectural, cultural and personal history of Oulu. She is also very familiar with the Hellmans of Oulu and has even published a book on the most notable house of our family in Oulu, the House of Reinilä at Kajaaninkatu 15.

At the end of day one we will get together for a dinner to celebrate our 70-year-old association and to launch the brand new Family Chronicle.

On Sunday we will start the day by heading to the Old Chapel of the Oulu cemetery. We will have a short service at the chapel and then visit the graves of some of our ancestors. From the cemetery, we will start our bus sightseeing, which will take us past the granary once governed by Fredrik Mauritz Hellman, the location of Tuomi-Yhtiöt and the house of Rehnbäck-Reinilä. After these sights, we will head towards Hietasaari to see the Hannala house of the Snellman family and to remember the golden days of tar trading in Oulu. Finally, we will visit the Hellman family villas in Hietasaari. On the way back to the city centre, we will stop by Pikisaari and Oulu Wool Factory, which used to be owned by our common ancestors.

Outside the official program there will be a day trip to the Krunni islands on Monday 7 August. The number of participants to this trip is limited due to the size of the boats we will be going there on and the trip will not be carried out if weather conditions get too rough. Once ashore, we will be served hot salmon soup. There will be a guided walk around the island and therefore you should wear sturdy but comfortable shoes and appropriate outdoor clothing. The terrain is relatively demanding, but does not require Ironman qualities.
